When it comes to fitted alcove cupboards, it’s not simply a question of filling the spaces available either side of the chimney breast. Take this Edwardian property in Ealing, where the client wanted a contemporary feel. Notice how these fitted alcove units float above the skirting board, giving the room a bigger feel. It also helps to tie the room together, particularly since there are no traditional cornices.
Adding to the minimalist style of those cupboards are the fitted alcove shelves that also appear to float, thanks to concealed brackets. The walnut finish adds a rich, dark elegance to the clean lines, gently set off by the solid stainless steel handles from Hettich. (As you can see, we like handles.)
In this instance the client didn’t want lighting installed, though many fitted cupboards can benefit from the addition of a few simple spotlights. You can see an example in this bespoke alcove unit in Chiswick. Instead, the eye is drawn by the bold decorative wallpaper and the slight protrusion of the fitted cupboard units past the chimney breast. Minimalist, elegant and original.
